Bonded stainless from Canonsburg, nonstick from China
All-Clad's D3 product pages say the pans are "Bonded, Engineered, & Assembled in Canonsburg, PA" and describe the cookware as "Made in the USA with global components in our Pennsylvania Factory since 1971." The D5 and Copper Core pages say the same, and their spec tables list the country as United States. All-Clad does not say which components are imported.
The nonstick lines are a different story. The HA1 hard-anodized nonstick page reads "Designed in Canonsburg, PA - USA, Made in China." All-Clad's own FAQ tells buyers to check each product page because origin varies by collection. For US-made All-Clad, buy the fully bonded stainless: D3, D3 Everyday, D5 or Copper Core.
A metallurgist's pan
Founder John Ulam was a metallurgist, not a cook. All-Clad says he held more than 75 patents for metal bonding used in car parts, aircraft and coins. He applied the same idea to cookware, bonding layers of stainless steel around an aluminum core, and started All-Clad Metalcrafters in 1971.
The company opened its factory in Canonsburg, a borough near Ulam's hometown in western Pennsylvania, and still operates there. In the D3 line, the aluminum core spreads heat while the stainless surface does the cooking, and the pans work on induction.
