Austin Air Systems was founded in Buffalo, New York in 1990 by Richard Taylor, who set out to help his wife Joyce cope with lifelong respiratory difficulties. Taylor built the first units in his home workshop, then scaled to a leased space, then to a purpose-built manufacturing facility that would eventually become the largest air cleaner factory in the world — still in Buffalo, still making every product by hand.
The company's commitment to domestic manufacturing was tested repeatedly as competitors moved production overseas to cut costs. Austin Air held. The Buffalo workforce handles every step of production: stamping the steel housings, winding the filters, assembling the units, and applying the baked-on powder coat finish. That decision proved prescient after September 11, 2001, when the Red Cross, FEMA, and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development all recommended Austin Air purifiers for air quality recovery. The US government selected Austin Air for the largest air purifier deployment in history during the Anniston, Alabama chemical weapons elimination program.
