The original Blackwing 602 was produced by Eberhard Faber from the 1930s until 1998, when the pencil was discontinued after a factory closure. The pencil had built a cult following among creative professionals — John Steinbeck wrote with them, Vladimir Nabokov specified them, Leonard Bernstein reportedly used them for composing. When the original Blackwing disappeared, boxes sold on eBay for extraordinary sums.
In 2011, Palomino (CalCedar) revived the Blackwing 602 in Stockton, California, at the CalCedar facility — the only remaining pencil factory in the United States. CalCedar has produced pencils at this location since the early twentieth century, carrying on American pencil manufacturing when nearly every other factory moved offshore. The revival Blackwing is now recognized as one of the finest pencils in the world.

Every Blackwing pencil is produced at the CalCedar factory in Stockton, California. The Blackwing 602 uses the original balanced graphite formula — not too soft, not too hard — with the distinctive rectangular pink eraser on an extending ferrule that lets you expose more eraser as it wears. The Blackwing Matte has a softer graphite core for darker marks, preferred by illustrators and sketch artists. The Pearl has the softest core of the three permanent models, with the smoothest feel on paper.
The Blackwing Volumes series releases limited-edition pencils each quarter, each one honoring a specific creative tradition — from jazz to animation to literary fiction — with custom graphite formulations, unique finishes, and accompanying booklets that tell the story behind the volume.
