From a Wauwatosa kitchen to Franklin
Alfred Woelbing made the first Carmex in his Wauwatosa, Wisconsin kitchen in 1937, to soothe his own lips. He filled each opal glass jar by hand, sealed it with a black lid and applied a paper label. Sales grew by visiting pharmacies and leaving samples.
After about 20 years he moved production out of the house into a dedicated space in Wauwatosa. Carma Laboratories began building a new production facility in the 1970s and moved to Franklin, a suburb south of Milwaukee, in the 1980s. The company says it now has a brand new facility and more than 250 employees, and it ships to more than 60 countries.
What comes out of the Franklin plant
Carma Labs says it manufactures and distributes all Carmex product, and its FAQ lists the company at 5801 West Airways Avenue in Franklin. That covers the Classic balm in the jar, tube and stick, along with the flavored and SPF balms such as Daily Care and Weather Guard.
