Camille Poirier's pack strap
Camille Poirier was born in Montreal in 1838 and worked as a leather shoemaker. He had settled in Duluth by 1870. On December 12, 1882 he patented the "C. Poirier Pack Strap," a tumpline that attached to a canvas pack and was worn across the forehead.
In 1911 Poirier sold the pack business to Duluth Tent & Awning Company, which kept making packs under the Duluth Pack name. The company now calls itself "the oldest manufacturer of canvas and leather bags and packs in the USA."
