The Doolittle Doodle Pad, 1919

The company's history begins in 1919, when John Doolittle started making the Doolittle Doodle Pad on the north bank of the Chicago River downtown. A customer suggested it would work as a calendar, so he added lines and dates, and the Doolittle Calendar Company was born. It was later renamed House of Doolittle and stayed in the Chicago area.

Ron Stavoe bought the company from the Doolittle family in 1978 and added appointment books, desk pads and wall calendars. In 1988 it decided to move to recycled paper, introduced its first recycled desk pad in 1989 and made its whole line with recycled paper by 1990. Soy inks followed in 1992. Since 2009 all of its white paper products have used 100% post-consumer, processed chlorine-free paper.

One plant in Arlington Heights

House of Doolittle lists itself as 100% made in the USA. It says all manufacturing and support work happens in its 80,000 square foot facility at 3001 Malmo Drive in Arlington Heights, about 25 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The company also sells bindery, collating and finishing services from the same plant.

That covers everything we list: the monthly and weekly planners, the academic monthly planner, the Earthscapes desk pad and the Farm Life wall calendar. Wire is 90% recycled and covers 50% recycled, by the company's own figures. We found no imported House of Doolittle line.
