Heritage & History
Jay Lehman opened his hardware store in Kidron, Ohio in 1955 specifically to serve the large Old Order Amish community of Holmes County, one of the largest Amish settlements in the world. The Amish use few or no electrical appliances, which created a sustained demand for tools, implements, and household goods that had long been discontinued by mainstream American retailers in favor of electric equivalents.
Lehman's location in Kidron — in the heart of Ohio's Amish country — gave the store access to traditional craftspeople who still made tools the old way: hand-forged, solid-wood handled, built to last generations.
Non-Electric and American-Made in Kidron, Ohio
Lehman's has expanded far beyond the Amish community to serve homesteaders, preppers, off-grid households, and anyone interested in traditional self-sufficient living. Their catalog spans hand tools, cast iron cookware, grain mills, canning equipment, oil lamps, seed supplies, and hundreds of other items, many of which are made in the USA by small American manufacturers.
Many Lehman's products are made by Amish craftspeople in Ohio — furniture, baskets, tools, and garden implements produced by hand using traditional methods. The store's physical location in Kidron draws visitors from across the country who come to see a working retail environment that prioritizes function over trend.
