Heritage & History
Markus Frederich Leupold, a German immigrant who arrived in the United States at age 16, opened a surveying equipment repair shop in Portland, Oregon in 1907 with his brother-in-law Adam Voelpel. The company's transformation from instrument repair to precision optics began during World War II, when engineers repairing rifle scopes for the U.S. Navy discovered that purging a scope's main tube with dry nitrogen eliminated internal fogging. That discovery led to the 1947 Plainsman riflescope, the first production scope with nitrogen-sealed, internally-adjusting optics, which became the most water-resistant hunting scope of its era.
Inventor John Cyprian Stevens joined as a third partner in 1914, and the company was formally reorganized as Leupold & Stevens in 1942. The company relocated from Portland to a purpose-built plant in Beaverton in 1968, a facility that has since expanded to more than 150,000 square feet of manufacturing space. The company has remained privately held by descendants of the founding families across five generations.
Made in Beaverton, Oregon
Every riflescope, red dot sight, mounting system, and Gold Ring spotting scope that Leupold produces is designed, machined, and assembled at the Beaverton facility by a workforce of more than 700 people. Raw bar stock is turned into finished scope tubes, turrets, and mounting hardware using CNC machining centers and proprietary tooling. Final assembly and function testing — including waterproofing verification and optical alignment — are completed under the same roof.
Leupold uses precise language in its marketing: riflescopes and mounts are described as 'designed, machined, and assembled' in the USA, with optical glass elements sourced from Japanese suppliers. The company's binocular lines are manufactured overseas and are not part of the domestic production story. The Beaverton factory's legacy runs deepest in firearm optics, where the lineage from the 1947 Plainsman to the current VX-6HD and Mark 5HD lines represents an unbroken tradition of American precision manufacturing.
