Over 120 Years of American Outdoor Furniture
Telescope Casual has manufactured outdoor furniture in upstate New York since 1903, making it one of the longest-continuously-operating outdoor furniture companies in the United States. The company's nearly one-million square foot facility in Granville, New York employs American workers and uses American-sourced raw materials — a manufacturing model the company has maintained through more than a century of market changes, import competition, and material cost fluctuations.
The company's name comes from its original product: telescoping beach chairs that could be adjusted for height. That telescoping mechanism — and the engineering precision it required — defined the company's approach to furniture construction from the beginning. Telescope chairs were built for the rigors of beach and salt air use, where ordinary furniture deteriorates quickly.
Sling Construction and Aluminum Frames
Telescope Casual's signature beach chairs use extruded aluminum frames and sling fabric — a construction pairing that defines the American beach chair category. The aluminum is extruded and drawn for extra strength, then assembled with zinc-plated rivets and screws that resist salt corrosion. The sling fabric is UV-stabilized to resist fading in direct sunlight, and the patterns are woven rather than printed, which means the color is structural rather than surface-applied.
The company's chair lineup covers the range from the basic Sun and Sand folding chair through the Mini-Sun Chaise and the high-boy styles that sit at a height that makes sitting down and standing up easier for adults. The Easy In and Out chair is particularly well-regarded among older beachgoers for its 20-inch seat height — tall enough to stand from without difficulty, low enough to be stable on sand.
American Made in a Category Dominated by Imports
The outdoor and beach furniture category is overwhelmingly dominated by imported products — most beach chairs sold at retail are manufactured in China using aluminum and fabric that undercuts American production costs substantially. Telescope Casual has maintained its New York manufacturing by targeting the segment of the market that values American production, durability, and quality over minimum price.
For buyers making a purchase decision: a Telescope Casual chair costs more upfront than most imported alternatives. The durability difference is meaningful for buyers who use beach furniture regularly — the frame construction and corrosion-resistant hardware extend the product life substantially compared to discount alternatives that rust and break after a season or two.
