A $2,400 start in Brookfield

Bob Reese and Allison Hooper started Vermont Creamery in 1984, after Bob asked Allison to make goat cheese for an event held by a Vermont restaurateur. They put in $2,400 between them.

The first goat cheese sale came in 1985, from a converted milk house on a farm in Brookfield. In 1986 Allison began making crème fraîche by filling cans of cream at a local dairy. The creamery in Websterville opened in 1988 with four employees.

The company became a certified B Corporation in 2014. Land O'Lakes, a farmer-owned cooperative, bought it in 2017, and both founders retired. The 82% butterfat cultured butter reached grocery dairy cases in 2018.

Vermont cream, imported goat curd

The cow's milk side is local. Vermont Creamery buys "cows' milk and cream from Dairy Farmers of America" from member farms "throughout the state of Vermont." That covers the cultured butters, crème fraîche and mascarpone.

The goat side is not all Vermont. The company says its "fresh goats' milk comes from a network of farms in Vermont and Canada," and that for fresh goat cheese logs it supplements "our North American supply of goats' milk with imported curd." The plain and herbed chevre logs are made in Websterville but can contain imported curd. Cremont and the other aged cheeses are made in Vermont.
