From a country club in Bradford

George G. Blaisdell got the idea at the Bradford Country Club, where he watched a friend struggle with a clumsy Austrian-made lighter that stayed lit in the wind thanks to its chimney. He redesigned it and named it after the word "zipper," which he liked the sound of. When the US entered World War II in 1941, Zippo stopped making lighters for consumers and sent its whole output to the military. The company is still owned by Blaisdell's family: his grandson George B. Duke and George's son Grant B. Duke are co-owners.

Which Zippo parts are made in China

Zippo's own product pages mark the classic windproof lighter cases "Made in USA," along with the Bit Safe screwdriver insert and the Pipe Lighter Insert. Its lighter fluid is bottled in Bradford.

The exception is the inserts that turn a Zippo case into a butane or electric lighter. Zippo's pages for the Yellow Flame and Single Torch butane inserts and the Double Arc rechargeable insert all say "Made in China." A classic flint-and-wick Zippo is US-made; swap in one of those inserts and that part is imported.

Free repairs and a museum in Bradford

Zippo's guarantee is "It works or we fix it free." Repairs happen at the Zippo Repair Clinic in Bradford, inside the 15,000-square-foot Zippo/Case Museum that opened in July 1997, where visitors can watch the work being done.
