The Story Behind the Brand
George G. Blaisdell founded Zippo Manufacturing in Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1932, inspired by an Austrian-made lighter he saw at a country club. He redesigned the mechanism, added the hinged lid and the distinctive wind-resistant chimney, and began production. The name was reportedly inspired by the word "zipper," which Blaisdell liked the sound of.
Zippo's growth was accelerated enormously by World War II, when the company converted nearly all production to military supply. American soldiers carried Zippos across every theater of the war, engraving them with unit insignia, names, and messages — creating a tradition of personalized lighters that continues today. The wartime generation's loyalty to the brand built a customer base that lasted for decades.
