About Chaco
Chaco was founded in 1989 by Colorado rafting guide Mark Paigen, who built the first pair of sandals to keep his guests' feet comfortable on multi-day river trips. Mark Paigen was guiding rafting trips in Colorado in the late 1980s when he grew frustrated with the footwear options available to his guests on multi-day river expeditions. He designed a sandal with an adjustable continuous strap system that could be tuned to individual foot geometry, a contoured footbed with arch support, and a durable rubber outsole suited to wet rock and camp life. Paigen named the brand Chaco and began making sandals for the outdoor recreation community in 1989.
