About CowPots
CowPots manufactures biodegradable planting pots from composted cow manure on their East Canaan, Connecticut dairy farm, producing 15 styles of USDA Certified Biobased pots that can be planted directly in the ground.
Heritage & History
CowPots grew out of a Connecticut dairy farm's need to do something useful with the composted manure produced by their herd. The McEnroe family's farm in East Canaan, Connecticut had been composting cow waste for years when they developed the technology to mold it into biodegradable planting pots — a product that solved the dual problem of manure disposal and plastic pot waste.
The concept was both ingenious and practical. Cow manure compost, compressed and dried into pot shapes, degrades naturally in soil while providing nutrients to plant roots that grow through the walls. Plastic pots require removal, causing transplant shock. CowPots eliminate the removal step entirely — gardeners plant the whole pot, which breaks down in a single growing season while feeding the soil. USDA certification as 100% Biobased followed naturally.
Made in East Canaan, Connecticut
Every CowPot is made on the McEnroe family farm in East Canaan, Connecticut, where the entire production process — from compost preparation through pot molding and drying — happens on a single property. The farm produces the raw material, the factory produces the pots, and the result is a completely traceable, genuinely American-made product with zero foreign sourcing in the core material.
CowPots are available in 15 styles including round pots in multiple sizes, square pots, and seedling tray configurations. All products are online and at garden centers nationally. The pots are USDA Certified 100% Biobased, break down in a single growing season, and attract beneficial worms and microorganisms as they decompose. For gardeners who want to reduce plastic waste in their garden practice, CowPots offer a genuinely sustainable alternative that is also genuinely American-made.
