About Crayon Rocks
Crayon Rocks handcrafts soy-based, rock-shaped crayons in Hestand, Kentucky, producing the only crayons specifically designed to strengthen the pincer grip children use for writing — made in small batches in a family studio using American soy wax.
Heritage & History
Crayon Rocks was created in 2003 in Hestand, Kentucky, when founder Mary Wright developed a new crayon form that could help young children develop the three-finger pincer grip essential for writing. Traditional crayons are long cylinders — easy to grip with a full fist but counterproductive for teaching the pincer grip. Wright's solution was a small, smooth rock shape that naturally encourages children to hold it with three fingers, building the muscle memory and coordination writing requires.
The crayons are made from soy wax — a renewable American agricultural product — rather than petroleum-based paraffin. The small family studio in Hestand, Kentucky has produced all Crayon Rocks products since the beginning, maintaining handmade quality in every set.
Made in Hestand, Kentucky
Every Crayon Rock is handmade at the Hestand, Kentucky studio using American soy wax and non-toxic pigments. The rocks are smooth, small, and irregularly shaped — exactly like real rocks — which is what makes them effective for grip development and makes coloring with them feel different from conventional crayon use. The 16-color set in a muslin bag is the classic Crayon Rocks product, beloved by Montessori educators and occupational therapists.
The 32-color set in a muslin bag expands the palette for older children and artists who want a wider color range in the rock format. The 8-color sets in velvet bags are popular as gifts. All Crayon Rocks are non-toxic, vegan, and made with soy wax from American soybean crops. For Montessori schools, OT clinics, and parents who want a crayon that's as educational as it is fun, Crayon Rocks from Kentucky is the original and still the best.
