About EarthBox
EarthBox pioneered self-watering container gardening in 1994 and has been manufactured in Lancaster, Pennsylvania since its acquisition by Novelty Manufacturing, delivering American-made gardening systems that have sold over a million units.
Heritage & History
EarthBox was pioneered in 1994 by Blake Whisenant, whose Florida family had been farming commercially since 1901. Whisenant developed the self-watering container system to make productive vegetable gardening accessible to people without ground space or extensive gardening knowledge. The system uses a water reservoir beneath the growing medium that delivers moisture to roots through capillary action, eliminating the guesswork of when and how much to water.
The product resonated deeply with apartment gardeners, patio growers, and beginners who had been frustrated by traditional container gardening's unforgiving moisture management requirements. EarthBox has sold over one million units worldwide and maintains a passionate user community that shares growing tips, recipes, and seasonal results. The brand was acquired by Novelty Manufacturing Co., a Lancaster, Pennsylvania company with over 100 years of American manufacturing history.
Made in Lancaster, Pennsylvania
EarthBox products are manufactured at Novelty Manufacturing's facility in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Novelty Manufacturing got its start in 1922 and has deep roots in American plastics manufacturing — a heritage that shows in the durability and UV resistance of EarthBox containers, which are designed for years of outdoor use without fading, cracking, or becoming brittle. Every EarthBox carries an explicit Made in USA designation.
The product line includes the Original EarthBox container system, the EarthBox Junior for smaller spaces, elevated raised garden bed versions with legs and wheels, and complete growing kits that include the container, casters, mulch cover, and premium plant food. For gardeners who want a foolproof American-made growing system that delivers consistent results whether you have a rooftop, balcony, or small patio, EarthBox has been the definitive choice for three decades.
