About Hammond's Candies
Hammond's Candies has made hand-spun candy canes, ribbon candy, and gourmet chocolates in Denver, Colorado since 1920, using artisan techniques passed down through a century of continuous operation at the same Denver location.
One Hundred Years in Denver
Carl T. Hammond Sr. founded the Hammond's Candy Company in Denver, Colorado in 1920, beginning with traditional hard candy produced using hand-crafting techniques. The company has operated in Denver continuously since its founding — over a century of candy manufacturing in the same city, using methods that trace directly to the original factory practices.
The Denver factory is open for public tours, where visitors can watch candy craftspeople hand-spin ribbon candy and candy canes using the same tools and methods that have defined the company since 1920. The transparency of the open factory reflects confidence in the process — Hammond's has nothing to hide about how the candy is made because the making is itself part of the product's value.
The Art of Hand-Spun Candy
Hammond's signature products — ribbon candy and candy canes — are made through a hand-crafting process that cannot be fully automated without losing the characteristics that define the product. Ribbon candy requires a confectioner to pull, fold, and shape hot sugar into the characteristic rippled form before it cools and hardens. Candy canes require pulling, twisting, and forming the striped sugar rope into the hook shape while the sugar is still workable.
The hand-crafting process is visible in the finished product: ribbon candy pieces vary slightly in shape and size, and candy canes show the hand work in the twist and hook. These variations are evidence of the artisan process rather than manufacturing inconsistency — mass-produced machine-made candy is perfectly uniform in ways that hand-made candy is not.
