About Micro Gainz

Micro Gainz is a fractional weight plate brand started by founder and CEO Mike Reed after he found a need for small weight increments in 2016 strength training. Its sintered steel micro plates and patented dumbbell micro plates are made near Clearfield, Pennsylvania.

Heritage & History

Micro Gainz began with its founder, Mike Reed, following a linear strength training program in 2016 in which five pounds were added to each lift every session. When those five-pound jumps became too hard to sustain on lifts such as the bench press, he went looking for fractional plates and found a need for accurate, affordable micro plates made in the USA, so he started his own business.

After developing micro plates for barbells, Reed invented and patented the Micro Gainz Dumbbell Micro Plate, which clamps onto the handle of most dumbbells so lifters can progress in small increments. The line now also includes Olympic-size kilogram fractional plates and magnetic add-on plates for Snode and Nuobell adjustable dumbbells.

Made in Clearfield, Pennsylvania

According to the company, Micro Gainz fractional plates are made from sintered metal, calibrated for precise weight and powder coated for durability, and they are made locally near Reed's hometown of Clearfield, Pennsylvania. The homepage describes the dumbbell plates as made from strong sintered steel and manufactured in the USA, each accurate to its stated weight within plus or minus 10 grams.

The dumbbell plates use an internal spring for clamping force, with pieces riveted together and a pressed-in logo and weight marking. The company presents its US manufacturing as central to the brand, describing its products as patented, precision made in the USA.
