The Pawleys Island rope hammock dates to the late 1800s, when riverboat captain Joshua John "Cap'n Josh" Ward set out to make a cooler bed for sultry Low Country summers. His design combined a double-latch weave of heavy cotton rope with spreader bars made from oak barrel staves, keeping knots away from the sleeping surface.
The Original Hammock Shop, founded by Cap'n Josh's family in 1935 on Pawleys Island, South Carolina, became the first retail store to sell the Original Pawleys Island Rope Hammock. The brand says the basic design has remained largely unchanged and became the template for the classic American rope hammock.
