About Otter Outdoors
Otter Outdoors manufactures ice fishing shelters and sleds in Minnetonka, Minnesota, producing the Pro Series and Resort series portable ice houses trusted by serious ice anglers for warmth, durability, and fishability in the coldest conditions.
Heritage & History
Otter Outdoors was founded in 1989 in Minnesota, developing a distinctive style of portable ice fishing shelter — the sled-based flip-over house — that allowed ice anglers to haul their shelter behind a snowmobile or ATV and flip it open over a hole in seconds. The Otter approach combined an insulated fabric shelter with an integrated sled, so the angler's gear rode inside the shelter during transport and the shelter itself became the floor surface when deployed.
The brand grew into one of the leading American ice shelter manufacturers, known for the quality of its fabric construction and the warmth of its insulation systems. Otter shelters became a benchmark in the industry, particularly among serious northern ice anglers who fish in the most extreme conditions the winter can produce.
Made in Minnetonka, Minnesota
Otter Outdoors manufactures ice fishing shelters at the Minnetonka, Minnesota facility. Production involves cutting and sewing insulated fabric panels, welding aluminum frame components, integrating sled bases, and assembling the complete shelter system. The flip-over mechanism must work flawlessly in freezing temperatures wearing heavy gloves — requiring precise engineering of hinge and latch systems.
Minnetonka is a western Minneapolis suburb, and the company's employees live and fish in the ice fishing culture their products serve. This proximity shapes product development in practical ways — problems discovered on actual ice fishing trips feed back into the next generation of shelter design. For ice anglers who want shelters made by a Minnesota company that understands what a 20-below morning on a frozen lake demands, Otter Outdoors delivers.
