About Planet Dog
Planet Dog has been designing and manufacturing its Orbee-Tuff dog toys in Maine since 1997, crafting durable, non-toxic toys from American-made materials and donating proceeds to service dog programs.
Heritage & History
Planet Dog was founded in Portland, Maine in 1997 by a group of dog lovers who believed pet toys should be made from the same safety standards applied to children's toys. The company developed its proprietary Orbee-Tuff material — a thermoplastic elastomer that is BPA-free, lead-free, and phthalate-free — as the foundation for a line of toys designed to be genuinely durable, not just marketed as tough.
The company's Glow for Good program donates 100% of proceeds from select products to Guiding Eyes for the Blind and other service dog organizations. That philanthropic commitment became central to the brand's identity and distinguishes it from competitors who treat pet products purely as commodity goods. Planet Dog's manufacturing in Maine and its charitable mission have earned it a loyal following among dog owners who care about both quality and values.
Made in the USA
Planet Dog manufactures its Orbee-Tuff toys at its facility in Buxton, Maine, using materials sourced and processed in the United States. The Orbee-Tuff compound — the same non-toxic, pliable rubber used across the product line — is formulated to be soft enough for sensitive mouths while tough enough for aggressive chewers. Each toy is molded, inspected, and packaged in Maine.
The made-in-USA manufacturing allows Planet Dog to maintain strict quality control over material safety and construction. Independent testing confirms that Orbee-Tuff products meet or exceed safety standards for materials that contact children's mouths — a standard Planet Dog applies to pet toys as well, reasoning that dogs who carry and chew toys are exposed to the same material contact risk. The company rates each toy on a 1-5 toughness scale to help owners match products to their dog's chewing style.
