The Story Behind the Brand
Charles Beckman founded the Red Wing Shoe Company in 1905 in Red Wing, Minnesota — a small city on the Mississippi River that had already established itself as a hub for leather goods manufacturing. Beckman's original focus was producing boots tough enough for the iron ore miners and farmers of the upper Midwest, where winters are brutal and workdays are long.
The company grew steadily through the early 20th century and eventually became one of the largest work boot manufacturers in the United States. The Heritage collection, launched as a distinct line in 2006, celebrates the original craft methods and archival boot designs that defined Red Wing's first century of production.
Crafted in Red Wing, Minnesota
Red Wing operates its manufacturing facility in Red Wing, Minnesota, where the company also runs a leather tannery — one of the few vertically integrated boot manufacturers in the United States. The S.B. Foot Tanning Company, owned by Red Wing, produces the Oro-Ignis, Oro-Russet, and other signature leathers used in Heritage boots, giving the company direct control over the primary material quality.
Heritage boots are built using traditional Goodyear welt or Tru-Flex (Littleway) construction, hand-lasted over wooden lasts, and finished by craftspeople who develop their skills over years of production. The Minnesota factory employs hundreds of workers, many of whom are the second or third generation of their family to work for the company.
