About Ross Reels
Ross Reels has precision-machined fly fishing reels in Montrose, Colorado since 1973, building American-made disc-drag reels that have become standard equipment for serious anglers from Patagonia to Alaska's salmon rivers.
Heritage & History
Ross Reels was founded in 1973 in Montrose, Colorado, at a time when fly fishing reels were largely undifferentiated products — functional but unexceptional. The founders believed that a precision-machined aluminum reel with a properly engineered disc drag could transform the fly fishing experience, particularly for anglers targeting large fish that demanded reliable drag performance over long, fast runs.
The Gunnison River and other legendary Colorado waters provided both inspiration and a testing ground. Colorado's fly fishing culture attracts serious anglers who can immediately tell the difference between a reel that performs under pressure and one that merely holds line, and the Ross team used that feedback to refine every aspect of their drag systems and machining tolerances.
Colorado Precision Manufacturing
Montrose, Colorado sits near the heart of some of the finest trout water in North America, and the fly fishing community there understands reels the way automotive enthusiasts understand engines. Manufacturing in Montrose gives Ross engineers direct access to anglers who use their products in demanding conditions and report back with the specificity that improves future designs.
Ross reels are CNC-machined from bar-stock aluminum, a manufacturing approach that produces stronger, more dimensionally consistent reels than casting. The disc drag systems are engineered to provide smooth, predictable resistance across the full range from dead stop to maximum pressure — critical when a steelhead or tarpon makes an explosive run that would expose any inconsistency in the drag washers. The reels have earned placement in the tackle bags of professional guides and competitive anglers who trust equipment with their livelihoods.
