About Skilcraft
SKILCRAFT is the manufacturing brand of the National Industries for the Blind, producing office supplies, janitorial products, and government goods through a network of over 100 nonprofit agencies employing blind and visually impaired Americans across the country. Operating under the AbilityOne program since 1938, SKILCRAFT represents one of the most enduring public-private partnerships in American manufacturing history.
Heritage & History
The National Industries for the Blind was established in 1938 under the Wagner-O'Day Act, which mandated that the federal government purchase certain products from nonprofits employing blind workers. That legislation, later expanded into the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Act and now known as the AbilityOne program, created the framework under which SKILCRAFT operates today — a network of community-based nonprofit agencies whose workforce includes Americans who are blind or have significant disabilities.
SKILCRAFT's most famous product is the US Government Pen, a retractable ballpoint manufactured to strict government specifications and recognizable in federal offices across the country for decades. But the SKILCRAFT brand extends far beyond pens to encompass hundreds of office products, cleaning supplies, and maintenance items procured by government agencies. The brand has become a symbol of American social entrepreneurship — a manufacturing program that simultaneously supplies the federal government and creates meaningful employment for Americans with disabilities.
Made Across the USA
Unlike a single-factory brand, SKILCRAFT products are manufactured at more than 100 NIB-associated nonprofit agencies distributed across the United States, from urban workshops to rural facilities. This distributed manufacturing model ensures that employment opportunities reach communities throughout the country, and that the federal government's procurement dollars support American workers from coast to coast. Products may be made in Virginia, Illinois, California, Texas, or any number of other states depending on which agency has the contract for a given item.
Every SKILCRAFT product sold to the federal government through the AbilityOne program must meet military and civilian procurement specifications, making quality control a non-negotiable requirement across all facilities. The program employs tens of thousands of Americans who are blind or have other significant disabilities — workers who might otherwise face substantial barriers to employment. SKILCRAFT manufacturing is not simply a supply chain: it is a nationwide social infrastructure built around the conviction that American workers of all abilities deserve meaningful work.
