Where is Slinky made?
Yes for most of what we list, but the factory city is unconfirmed. Six of the eight Slinky products we list carry a "Made in USA" statement on their live product listings, covering both metal and plastic Slinkys. Our record places production in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, but the brand's current owner, Just Play, names no manufacturing location on its Slinky pages, and the older brand site we had on file no longer loads.
The brand does not disclose any imported Slinky line. Two products we list show no origin statement: one Original metal Slinky listing and the black Collector's Slinky from Just Play. About Slinky
Slinky was born in 1945 when naval engineer Richard James discovered that a coiled spring could walk end-over-end, and it has been captivating children ever since. Manufactured in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania since 1998, the original Slinky remains one of the best-selling and most enduring American toys ever made.
Heritage & History
Richard James was working as a naval engineer in Philadelphia in 1943 when he accidentally knocked a tension spring off a shelf and watched it gracefully walk across the floor. Two years of refinement later, he and his wife Betty introduced the Slinky at Gimbels department store in Philadelphia for Christmas 1945 — the first 400 units sold out in 90 minutes. The toy was patented, priced at one dollar, and marketed with a jingle that became one of the most recognized in American advertising history.
Over 300 million Slinkys have been sold since that Philadelphia debut, making it one of the highest-volume toys ever manufactured in the United States. Betty James took over the company in 1960 after Richard left to join a religious group in Bolivia, and she ran it with remarkable business acumen for decades. The brand eventually became part of POOF-Slinky, which was later acquired by Alex Brands.

Slinky production moved from Philadelphia to Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania in 1998, where it has remained ever since. The Hollidaysburg facility continues to stamp, coil, and finish the iconic steel spring using machinery and methods that have changed little over the decades — a point of pride for a toy that has always been about elegant simplicity rather than electronic complexity.
Each standard Slinky is made from 67 feet of flat wire coiled into 98 coils, a specification that has remained unchanged since Richard James settled on it in the 1940s.
