About Smart Pot
Smart Pot has been manufacturing fabric grow bags and raised bed containers entirely in Oklahoma City since 1984, pioneering the fabric pot category that has transformed how gardeners grow plants.
Heritage & History
The Smart Pot story begins in 1980 when Ralph Reiger of Oklahoma City invented the concept of growing plants in breathable fabric containers. Reiger's insight was that fabric allowed air to penetrate the growing medium from the sides, causing roots to branch and spread rather than circling the pot wall as they do in rigid containers. This air pruning effect produces a far more developed root system, which translates directly to healthier, more productive plants.
High Caliper Growing began manufacturing Smart Pots commercially in Oklahoma City in 1984, initially targeting the commercial tree nursery industry where the benefits of air pruning for young trees were immediately recognized. The product gradually crossed over into the consumer gardening market, and the Smart Pot name became synonymous with fabric container gardening — a category that Smart Pot essentially created. Today the brand is used by backyard gardeners, commercial operations, and hydroponic growers worldwide.
Made in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Every Smart Pot is manufactured in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, from BPA-free, lead-free materials that are hand-inspected for quality before shipping. All raw materials and manufacturing processes are sourced in the USA. The fabric construction allows for excellent drainage, prevents overwatering, and maintains healthy soil temperatures by allowing excess heat to escape through the container walls — a significant advantage in hot climates.
Smart Pots are available in sizes from 1 gallon to 1,000 gallons, in round and square configurations, with and without handles. The Big Bag Bed line offers raised bed versions in sizes suitable for growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Products are available at garden centers, hydroponic supply stores, and online. For gardeners who want the healthiest possible root environment in an American-made container, Smart Pot is the original and still the best.
