Stumptown Coffee Roasters opened its first cafe on Southeast Division Street in Portland in 1999, in a former beauty parlor. Founder Duane Sorenson ran the operation with one employee, a Ford Pinto for deliveries, and a single small vintage Probat roaster; that original location later inspired the name of the company's signature espresso blend, Hair Bender.
