Therm-a-Rest was created by Cascade Designs in Seattle, Washington in 1971, when John Burroughs and Neil Anderson developed the first self-inflating sleeping pad. The invention solved a fundamental problem in lightweight backpacking: foam pads were bulky and heavy, while air mattresses were fragile and required manual inflation. The self-inflating pad used open-cell foam that expanded automatically when a valve was opened, combining the insulation of foam with the compressibility of an air mattress.
The original Therm-a-Rest design was patented in 1972 and became the standard sleeping pad for serious backpackers within a decade. Cascade Designs has continued developing the technology from its Seattle facility, introducing each generation of improvements from reflective insulation layers to triangular baffle systems that maximize warmth-to-weight efficiency.
