About Tootsie Roll Industries
Tootsie Roll Industries has manufactured its famous chocolate-flavored taffy and lollipops in the United States since 1896, with a 3.2-million-square-foot factory on Chicago's South Side that produces over 65 million Tootsie Rolls every single day.
Heritage & History
Leo Hirschfield arrived in New York from Austria in 1896 and opened a small candy shop in Manhattan, where he began making a chewy chocolate candy he named after his daughter Clara — her nickname was Tootsie. The candy was unlike anything else on the market: it combined chocolate flavor with a waxy, taffy-like texture that didn't melt in warm weather, making it ideal for shipping and storage.
The company grew steadily through the twentieth century, acquiring brands including Tootsie Pops, DOTS, Junior Mints, and Charleston Chew. Tootsie Rolls became famous during World War II when they were included in soldiers' rations — the candy survived harsh conditions and provided both calories and a small taste of home. Today Tootsie Roll Industries is one of the few major American candy companies that remains independent and publicly traded, and every piece of candy it produces is made in the United States.
Made in Chicago, Illinois
Tootsie Roll's main manufacturing complex occupies 3.2 million square feet on Chicago's South Side — one of the largest food manufacturing facilities in North America. The factory runs around the clock, producing more than 65 million Tootsie Rolls per day along with Tootsie Pops, DOTS, Junior Mints, and the company's other candy brands. The South Side facility has been the heart of American candy manufacturing for over a century.
Tootsie Roll Industries also maintains manufacturing facilities in Illinois, New York, Tennessee, and Mexico for certain product lines, but the core Tootsie Roll and Tootsie Pop production is firmly rooted in Chicago. The company employs thousands of American workers and sources sugar, cocoa, and other ingredients primarily from US suppliers. Every package of Tootsie Rolls carries the Made in USA designation — a fact that has been true since Leo Hirschfield's original Manhattan candy shop.
