About Vic Firth
Vic Firth began in the late 1950s and early 1960s when Boston Symphony Orchestra timpanist Vic Firth started making his own sticks and mallets. The company makes drumsticks and mallets at its factory in Maine and has been part of the Avedis Zildjian Company since 2010.
Heritage & History
Vic Firth's story began in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Vic Firth, then Principal Timpanist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, was not satisfied with the sticks and mallets available to him, so he began making his own in his garage, sometimes whittling them by hand and sometimes working with a wood turner. As word spread among his students and other percussionists, music stores began calling with orders.
In 2010 Vic Firth merged with the Avedis Zildjian Company, a move the company describes as part of Vic's plan for the business beyond his lifetime, and Balter Mallets joined the family in 2018. The catalog now runs to more than 200 varieties of sticks and mallets that vary in length, taper, tip and material.
Made in Newport, Maine
The Vic Firth factory is in Maine, and the company says its sticks and mallets are made in its factories in Newport, Maine and Norwell, Massachusetts. Wood is dried to keep sticks straight, shaped by centerless grinding, and every pair is weight-matched and pitch-paired, with human hands involved at each step of the process.
The company sources its wood sustainably, and hickory makes up about 90% of its sticks. It reclaims 90% of the water used in grinding and burns sawdust and waste wood as a carbon-neutral heat source for the plant and its kilns. Vic Firth was also the first company to package paired sticks in fully recyclable paper sleeves.
