About XM SURF MORE
XM | SURF MORE began in 1973 when surfer Bob Nealy built a Velcro-strap surf leash on an industrial sewing machine. The company makes surfboard, bodyboard, SUP and river-surf leashes in San Clemente, California.
Heritage & History
The company traces its start to 1973, when Bob Nealy, a lifeguard, All-American water polo player at UC Irvine and former military para-rescue man, grew unhappy with the leather cinch strap on his surf leash. Looking at the Velcro on his old rescue vest, he bought an industrial sewing machine, made a few samples from webbing and bungee cord, and took them to Hobie's surf shop, which ordered 50 on the spot.
Through the 1970s Nealy kept refining the design: he put extra para-cord inside latex tubing to make a limited-stretch leash that would not snap the board back, left the first ten inches without stretch in an early form of the railsaver, and molded a stem that held the cord away from the ankle. That stem evolved into the first XM leash with a molded urethane strap. The company says its original garage operation has since grown into a worldwide supplier of leashes, now including custom builds.
Made in San Clemente, California
XM | SURF MORE states that its leashes are homegrown in the USA and that every leash is made at its shop in San Clemente, California, at 250 Calle Pintoresco. The range covers surfboard, bodyboard and fin-tether, SUP, river-surf and dog leashes, plus a customization program where buyers design their own leash.
The company credits long-tenured staff for the work: it names an artisan, Craig, who has been with the company for more than 35 years, and says its sewing team has more than 20 years of experience.
