From an Oakfield hardware store
Chapin began in 1884 at Harris & Chapin Hardware in Oakfield, New York, a store Ralph E. Chapin opened at 21 with his brother-in-law, Frank L. Harris. Customers kept bringing in leaking sprayers, and in the early 1900s Chapin made its first compressed-air sprayers. During the Second World War it was one of the first businesses to hire women as welders.
In the 1980s the company outgrew its Liberty Street site and moved to 700 Ellicott St. in Batavia, a former Sylvania plant, which is still its address. Backpack sprayers joined the line in the 2000s. In 2021 Chapin added two Kentucky facilities for manufacturing and warehousing, in Mt. Vernon and Danville, and it says it also has locations overseas.

Chapin's FAQ says its sprayers are manufactured in the United States and that "A percentage of our internal components do come from outside the United States." Product pages word it the same way. The 61800 backpack sprayer, the 48-ounce hand sprayer and the 60124 20V battery backpack sprayer are each "Made in the USA with global materials," and the 60124 page says it is produced at Chapin's home base in Batavia.
