Pete Browning's bat, 1884
The company tells it this way: in 1884, 17-year-old Bud Hillerich made a bat for Louisville player Pete Browning, who was in a slump. "By the next game, Browning scored three hits with the very bat Bud made." The Louisville Slugger name became a registered trademark in 1894.
Wilson Sporting Goods bought the brand from Hillerich & Bradsby in 2015. H&B kept the factory and the museum, and it "continues to produce Louisville Slugger bats in Louisville, Kentucky" for Wilson. H&B has been at 800 West Main Street since 1996.
About 3,000 bats a day on Main Street
The Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory says it turns about 3,000 full-sized bats a day, and the floor is open for public tours. Maple and ash bats such as the MLB Prime, Select Cut M9, Genuine Series 3 and Genuine Mix come from there. The slugger.com page for the Legacy LTE Mix wood bat says "Made in the USA."
The brand also sells aluminum and composite bats. We found no stated origin for those, so do not assume a metal or composite Louisville Slugger was made at the Louisville factory. If you want the Kentucky-made product, buy wood.
