A tally book for wet logging camps
Jerry Darling started the business in 1916 after Alec Polson of Polson Lumber Company asked whether there was a better way to record log scaling and lumber tallies in Pacific Northwest weather. Timber cruisers were using painted wooden tally boards. Darling began in Raymond, Washington, with printer Herbert Buffington, then moved production to Tacoma. Until about 1930, sheets were dipped by hand in waterproofing solution using bicycle chains and hand cranks.
In 1950 Bill Sny designed a web-coating machine for the company. Lloyd Silver became president in 1958, and his sons Todd and Scott bought all the shares in 1993. A 1996 plant redesign moved to a water-based coating and soy-based inks, and a 2002 GSA contract let the military, Forest Service and National Park Service buy direct. In August 2025 Pennington Creek Capital took a majority stake in the Tacoma company.
Read the Manufactured line
Every product page on the Rite in the Rain site has a "Manufactured" line. The top spiral, side spiral, stapled and hard cover notebooks, the field books such as the No. 350F and No. 353, the Transit No. 303, index cards and loose-leaf paper all read "MANUFACTURED: U.S.A." The metal all-weather pens and the No. 37 pressurized refill are US-made by Fisher Space Pen for the brand.
The Monsoon line of bags, pouches and wallets is the exception. The Monsoon Rapid Pouch is listed as "Designed in Tacoma, Made in China," and the Monsoon card wallet as "China, designed in Tacoma." Buy the paper, notebooks and pens for a US-made item, and check that line on any carry accessory.
