About Fisher Space Pen
Fisher Space Pen has manufactured its pressurized writing instruments in Boulder City, Nevada since 1976, earning its place in history as the pen carried by NASA astronauts on every crewed space mission since Apollo 7 in 1968.
Heritage & History
Paul C. Fisher founded the Fisher Pen Co. in 1948 in Chicago, Illinois. He made an early mark in 1953 by inventing a universal ink refill compatible with most ballpoint pens, but his most consequential work came during the Space Race. Convinced that conventional ballpoint pens were inadequate for spaceflight, Fisher invested roughly one million dollars of his own money — with no government funding — into developing a pressurized ink cartridge using thixotropic ink that remained semi-solid until the shear of a rolling ball liquefied it on demand. He patented the resulting AG7 Anti-Gravity pen in 1965.
After more than two years of rigorous testing, NASA adopted the pen for its Apollo program. The AG7 flew aboard Apollo 7 in October 1968 and Fisher Space Pens have been carried on every manned NASA mission since, including the Apollo 11 moon landing. Even the Soviet Union purchased 100 Fisher pens and 1,000 cartridges in 1969 for use on Soyuz flights. Paul Fisher passed away in 2006; leadership passed to his son Cary Fisher, who serves as president alongside partner Dock Wong.
Made in Boulder City, Nevada
Fisher Space Pen relocated from Van Nuys, California to Boulder City, Nevada in 1976. The 30,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on Yucca Street is where every pressurized refill cartridge is assembled, charged with nitrogen, and sealed. Boulder City, situated roughly 25 miles from Las Vegas, is the sole municipality in Nevada that prohibits gambling — a quiet, community-focused town that suits a family-run manufacturer.
The plant employs approximately 60 people, many of whom have been with the company for decades. The company kept furloughed staff on its payroll during the COVID-19 pandemic rather than making permanent cuts. Fisher was invited to the White House Made in America Showcase in 2019, and the Boulder City factory and retail store remain open to the public.
