Jason McCarthy was still serving as a Green Beret when he and his wife Emily sketched out the idea for GORUCK in 2008. The concept: build a rucksack that could survive Baghdad and look at home in New York City. McCarthy spent two and a half years developing the GR1, using active Green Berets as the judge and jury on quality. The GR1 launched in 2010, and that same year GORUCK hosted its first endurance challenge event — a team event patterned after Special Forces selection.
GORUCK grew from $52,000 in revenue in 2010 to $4.1 million by 2012. The company's early manufacturing was in Bozeman, Montana, where a single GR1 required 3.5 hours of hand sewing. In 2019, standard production moved to Vietnam, while USA-built production was preserved for limited edition GR1s and custom workshop builds at Jacksonville Beach.
